      @@AdaminWales hmm it's not a simple answer. I mean I was a late arrival to the Catan wave circa 2008. Then just when games started progressing from there I got bogged down with kids. I kept up with a few family friendly titles like Ticket to ride, Carcassone, Forbidden Island etc etc. 2.5 years ago I joined a boardgame group and we play Euros from the golden period of gaming. Hansa, Great Western Trails, Brass, Praga, Puerto Rico etc. I really love playing through those old titles I missed out on. I used to love watching Board game review videos and lists on UA-cam. But nowadays the only ones that keep my attention are the games about legendary out of print titles. So it is clear to me that there has been a change in the industry.

    I feel like the main difference today is the existance of video games, which are better at the whole fair complexity thing. While in boardgames the social element is the main draw. Unfair but simple design may be better.😊

      I think you’re right that video games can be far more complex. But I’m not sure that the opposite of complexity is unfairness. I think it’s possible to create very simple games which are fair!

Though since you are very well spoken and have an ordered approach to how you do this more informal ones they are still an excellent view. I am not american,so i dont know much of english. Why do you call the word dice, die? Never heard of that form, so "die" is like the singular form of dice, and dice is the plural of die? Because i think i already heard the word "dices" but i cant be sure...

    • @AdaminWales

      Die is singular. Dice is plural. But widespread usage of dice as a singular means many people accept that usage (though lots of other people would prefer that it remains plural only!) Dices isn’t a real word, I’m afraid! Sorry! :)

    Hi Adam, fellow designer here (Search for Planet X, Between Two cities). Congratulations on your success, both with the channel and also with getting games published. And thanks for this video! You are right on about everything mentioned here. I would also add that there has been an explosion of conventions over the last 10 years. So many more small to medium sized local conventions (in the USA it seems like every city of more than 100K people has it's own small local annual con). So just more opportunities to meet people locally, find new playtesters, and connect with the local game design community (at least in the United States).

    I'm going to take a wild guess and assume you didn't like Pokemon Master Trainer. More seriously, I do think setback and turn removal mechanics do have a place. Not as a completely random event, but as a punishment for playing too recklessly or an emergency brake usable by an opponent. We've all been in those games where someone is running away with it, you have zero agency to respond but they just can't win in a short period of time.

  • @GeorgeMorehead

    Hi Adam, thanks so much for this video. It's interesting to hear that 500 copies sold is on the very low side of things, is that just if you're working with a publisher, as 500 units sold on KS seems to be quite good going?

    • @AdaminWales
      @AdaminWales 2 дні тому

      500 copies sold on Kickstarter is an exciting start! But ideally most designers would want a game to have a longer lifespan than one small print run. If you are self-publishing, you take a larger cut of the profit, so 500 copies might be financially worthwhile. For a designer working on a royalty basis, they’ll probably receive 20 cents to 1 dollar per copy sold. So 500 copies amounts to very little income.

    I am wondering when you design a board game, do you try creating tension on the board for the players? This is what I am looking for when I play board games and I am wondering how a designer create those tension point for the player to compete over. My favorite game is Dune: Imperium and the game is full of it so I am curious how this aspect is looked at when creating a new game.

    • @AdaminWales
      @AdaminWales 3 дні тому

      Yes, it’s a very important aspect of board games. Tension can come from several different angles: competing with other players, bluffing and hoping not to be exposed, pulling off a plan. But it doesn’t always have to involve interaction with other players - sometimes interaction with the game itself can create tension: like a particularly challenging puzzle, or competing against the clock, or an automa deck in a solo game. Like most aspects of gaming, some players will love tension. Others will hate it. So a designer needs to make a choice about how far to build the tension. For example, Agricola is famous for being a very stressful game to play because of the difficulty in amassing enough food for your workers. This tension was much reduced in the sequel Caverna where food is easier to come by. Some people loved the change; others preferred the original. Tension is one of the five things I look for in board games: 1. Thematic Immersion 2. Player interaction 3. Tension, challenge, stress 4. Feedback 5. Meaningful decisions I don’t need a game to have all these features to be engaging for me; but it must have a few of them.

    • @Exozik
      @Exozik 3 дні тому

      @@AdaminWales As a avid player for tension I wasn't thinking of the other crowd that indeed probably are looking more for a more relax experience and how it must be a delicate balance you have to make as a designer when you design the game. Very interesting. Thank you :)

    I disagree about the point that randomness in games is inherently a bad thing or a mistake. I will fully agree that it's not a great idea in a Eurogame or a very long game, but there are very fun modern games where the randomness and unfairness is part of the fun - either because they are very clear that it's more about the story or because they are short enough that it doesn't really matter that much. Two examples: I love playing Galaxy Trucker and that thing's second phase always boils down to "Jesus, take the wheel". It's a game you play BECAUSE you want crazy stuff to happen and see who the RNG throws around hardest. Betrayal at House on the Hill is another one that is always good fun. You go in fully aware that the endgame can be hilariously unbalanced, favoring either the traitor or the heroes massively, but that's not really the point of the game.
